I know it seems a little silly, but how can one person have a conversation with somebody across the country with no delay?

The reason for No delay is the fact that sound waves emanating from a person speaking into the mouthpiece are converted to electromagnetic waves.
Now, electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light, approximately 300,000 km/s. At this speed, the diameter of earth which is just 12,715.43 km will be covered in just 0.043 seconds!!!!
And that's why, people can have a conversation over the phone across the world without any delay.
Hope this answers your question :)

Well, electricity travals at nearly the speed of light, so impulses can travel around the worldin a fraction of a second. Delays are sometimes present, more often if the signal has to be digitized.
