a busy signal is a beep followed by a seconds silence before another beep, continuing spaced out by a second

a disconnected line (disconnected by the service provider) is a continual beep or not valid number may have a recorded message asking you to check the number and try again.

If the phone is simply disconnected from the socket it may either appear to ring as normal or give the busy/engaged tone

a busy signal can still mean a fault in the line or phone.

a FAST busy signal is either an error at the switch that you are making the call from (possibly all circuits are busy) or a fault on the line or CO equipment

a line that has been disconnected or suspended will have a recording saying "this line is no longer in service" and if available they may also say "the new number is ---------"
