Also, I see "DECT" (digital enhanced cordless technology) in the advertising. What is DECT? Is it better than other types of cordless? Which brand names are considered the best quality cordless phones? Which type of phone (900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 5.8 GHz, DECT), has the longest range?

Best Long Range Cordless Phone

while in theory you would assume the 900 MHz phone to operate the furthest, as the lower the frequency the further the range this is not the case, for one reason only.. they operated at much lower transmitting power...

best brand would be Panasonic

best range would be in the following order:

DECT 1.9Ghz

2.4Ghz

5.8Ghz

900MHz

if you have WiFi, forget about the 2.4Ghz, the wifi and phone may interfere with each other, also keep these phones away from microwaves, as that also may interfere with its signal

900 MHz (unless it specifically states that it has DSS) is easy to listen in on with a radio scanner, while illegal, it is very easy to do with an unmodified off the shelf scanner.

DECT stands for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telephone

ALL cordless phone radio frequencies are unlicenced bands for home consumer devices, however, DECT 1.9Ghz phones do not share there frequency with any other devices, this band is for the exclusive use of cordless phones..

The longest range would be the old 900 MHz DSS phones. I still have an old Uniden phone that will cover a city block under the right conditions. I used to take it with me on my evening walk and take calls! From the reviews I have seen, a DECT phone will cover the average house. A far cry from the range I still get with my old phone! The 900 MHz phone does not interfere with my wireless network nor does it receive interference from a microwave.
