you could get a phone system.. which would probably require rewiring your home or office, since each jack needs to be run directly to the phone system and your wiring is probably just run in a loop...
this would be the expensive way of doing things..
but if you need less than 4 phone lines then you could just get something like the at&t 10x0 series phones... 1040, 1060, 1080 they have all of the features of a phone system.. but will be able to use your existing wiring, wont require a tech and should be simpler... but i would only recommend this for smaller businesses or residences that want some added features like this on there phone...

To save on pro installer costs, you could also take a look at Aksys Konnect phone system which requires no PBX, server, or hosted service which is pretty good for home office or small office needs.
You can take a look at the products and demo video here to get a better idea on how it works.
The system is called a telephone network as far as I know it. I would look elsewhere for more professional information. You can probably find a company that makes professional products that would have such an item.

An Electrical PBX (Private Branch eXchange.) You need a professional, not me or any of these Yahoo!s. Locate a real technician: http://www.sundance-communications.com/
