Is it time to replace the cordless phone, or is there something wrong with the line?

There are two phones in the house - an older cordless phone that was lightly used (and has recently replaced its used and abused twin) in the kitchen, and a corded phone in the master bedroom. There are at least five calls to the house per day, and more and more often, most of those calls go unanswered. Why? We (the residents of the house) answer from the cordless, since it's so easily accessible. But, more often than not, you go to press Talk on the cordless phone, the screen blanks out, and the two phones keep ringing. So one of us will run as fast as we can to the other phone, but it's always too late (closest I've gone was my hand being a foot away from the corded phone).

Just a few days ago our service provider went to something he called a "box", or "shack" about five kilometers away where the main lines are situated or something. Apparently there was a mouse nest, and they had chewed the phone line, causing a fuzzy noise whenever we tried talking on the phone (we had enough after three weeks of it).

We have owned the house since June 1, but couldn't move in until June 3 because we had to call in an exterminator to get rid of the mice living in the house. Didn't help that the 84-year-old who lived there for the past few years by himself fed his dog on the deck, leaving the food lying around, and all that jazz.

The kitchen was recently renovated (not sure when exactly, but it was sometime before February of this year), so it may be possible that while the renovation was going on, the line for the phone jack in the kitchen got damaged. Or the mice chewed it.

The man who serviced us (and fixed the line in that shack) said it might be that a yellow wire is damaged in the house, and that it will cost us "mega bucks" to replace it. Maybe that's the cause.

Or, could it be that the approximately ten-year-old cordless phone needs a new battery (still has the original rechargeable), or retired?

lots of information... and most of it does not relate to the problem that you are having...

i would first bring that corded phone down to the jack that the cordless is connected to and see if the jack works before doing anything else...

mentioning that when you press the talk button on the cordless phone the screen goes blank it indicates to me that the phone is not being charged, or that the battery is not properly connected, or is no good... i would start by cleaning the contacts on the cordless base and telephone with a pencil eraser, and ensuring that the electrical power to the cordless base is connected and working... once the contacts are clean and power is confirmed to be going to the phone, i would remove the back of the handset and ensure that the battery is inserted properly and tightly... then charge the phone for at least 12 hours... if it the cordless still does not work after that (but the jack does with the corded phone) then i would consider replacing the battery, since it should be cheaper to replace the battery than the phone...

Just a wild guess but I would suggest replacing battery in the cordless phone.
