The copper wire is required (your telephone line) Talk to your service provider about this, different countries have different rules Here, it is compulsory to pay line rental for a land line when you connect up with DSL, it is just a rule Some countries don't follow this rule, for the simple reason that it is reticules, if you fall in to this category then good luck, but only your ISP will be able to tell you Your ISP may also offer you the ability to use Naked DSL, however if it is compulsory to have a phone line in your country, what they will do is just add the cost of line rental in the plan cost, you can usualy tell this when there is a $20+ difference in the naked prices

First of all Cable internet does not involve anything related to your phone line jack. It is basically a cable from the outside of your house (from the nearest pole) line connected to the inside of your house and attached to a modem. From there the modem is attached to your computer.

As far as ooma VOIP, once you purchased it you will receive the ooma hub which is the main device in your house. You can install with or without a telephone line jack (but it will go through your internet router and modem). If you install it through your telephone jack then your locals calls go through your telephone line and any long distance calls go through ooma.

The ooma scout has to be installed through the telephone line because this will give you a 2nd line if someone is using Ooma currently.

I have Voip and I'm using DSL from At&t. Cable would be about twice as much, so it doesn't make sense to get rid of the Combination, of DSL and phone line. You don't have to use the phone line.

You don't need a phone line to get AT&T DSL anymore. Check out their website. Its called AT&T DSL Direct. I don't know about Comcast prices, but if they're similar to Time Warners Prices, they are not double that of AT&Ts. They are generally the same.

As for your question, I don't know about ooma, but I've used a VOIP service called Packet 8 (similar to vonage) and they give you a box that connects to the DSL/Cable modem, whichever you have, via an ethernet cable. Then you hook up a regular phone to the VOIP box via a regular phone jack. Then bam, you make phone calls.
