Fifty-seven varieties doesn't mean 57 varieties of ketchup, you dope, it means 57 varieties of food products in general. There are only three varieties of Heinz ketchup, regular, hot, and low-sodium, but there are far more than 57 varieties of Heinz pickles, Heinz sauces, Heinz soups, and Heinz God-knows-what-else. In fact, if you count everything Heinz and all its divisions and subsidiaries make, there are something like 1,300 varieties, including 108 varieties of baby food, 60 kinds of pickles, and so on.

Very interesting question. No there are not 57 kinds of ketchup... many years ago Heinz had a variety of products... 57. and used that saying as a catchy advertising ploy. It really did catch on. Since then the saying "Heinz 57 Varieties" has taken on new meanings like a dog that has many blood lines... he is said to be "Heinz 57 Variety" or something that has a varied combination of things making up its whole... This is why they keep that now vary valuable piece of advertising as part of their logo.

No, they don't make 57 varieties of ketchup! Way back when I was a kid and the Heinz corporation was a lot younger, too, they made 57 varieties of condiments. I suspect the phrase is retained on the ketchup bottle out of nostalgia.

Heinz wanted to show that their company had a vast array of products, so they chose the slogan "57 varieties."
